The Butler County commissioners will not make an immediate decision on what to do with nearly $2 million in Act 13 Impact Fee money.
During a special meeting Monday, the commissioners unanimously agreed to hold off dispersing the funds, which were earned in 2014, until the state has a budget in place, or at least there’s a clearer picture of the state’s finances.
Commissioner Bill McCarrier noted the money may have to be temporarily used to fund county human services next year if the state is still at an impasse.
“I’m reluctant to make any commitments at this time,” McCarrier said.
In a typical year, the commissioners wouldn’t even discuss impact fee money allocations until after the first of the year, but because of the upcoming November election and the fact that there will likely be three new commissioners next year, they decided to look at it early. They plan to resume discussions in late November.
“It seemed only right that this board allocated these funds,” Chief Clerk Amy Wilson said.
Act 13 money comes from fees mandated to companies who construct gas wells within the county. There are rules on how the money may be spent. For 2014, the county received $1.9 million. A decision on allocation must be made by April 15, 2016.
Act 13 was signed into law by former Governor Tom Corbett in 2012.
