The Slippery Rock University football team defeated Shepherd 51-30 in the second round of the NCAA playoffs Saturday and will meet Notre Dame College of Ohio this weekend in a quarterfinal rematch from last season. Game time is 1pm. Hear the game on The Rock Station 97.7fm beginning at 12:30pm.
SRU wide receiver Jermaine Wynn, Jr. set a national playoff record with 18 catches in Saturday’s win. He had 229 yards receiving. Running back Charles Snorweah had over 100 yards rushing and scored three times. Harlon Hill nominee quarterback Roland Rivers III had over 400 yards passing and threw four touchdown passes. The Rock is one of the eight teams remaining in the national playoffs for the second straight season.
Penn State defeated Rutgers 27-6 to finish the regular season 10-2.
Pitt lost their regular season finale at Heinz Field. The Panthers lost their final two games of the year and fell to 7-5.
Both Pitt and Penn State await post-season Bowl bids.
Ohio State completed a perfect run through the Big Ten regular season with a 56-27 pounding of Michigan. The Buckeyes get a rematch with Wisconsin for the Big Ten championship this Saturday after Wisconsin defeated Minnesota 38-17 to win the West Division.
LSU remained perfect with a 50-7 win over Texas A&M. The Tigers remain #1 in the latest Associated Press poll ahead of Ohio State. Clemson holds on to the #3 spot following a 38-3 win over South Carolina.
#4-Georgia defeated Georgia Tech 52-7.
LSU and Georgia meet for the SEC title this Saturday.
Utah moved to #5 in the nation following a 45-15 win over Colorado. The Utes will meet Oregon in the Pac-12 championship next week. They are the beneficiaries of Auburn’s 48-45 win over Alabama.
Alabama fell to #9 this week in the latest Associated Press poll – ending a record run of 68 consecutive appearances in the poll’s top five. It is the first time since November 2015 that the Crimson Tide have not been among the nation’s top five teams.
Avonworth, Thomas Jefferson, Central Valley and Farrell have reached the PIAA championship games in their respective classes. All of the title games will be played this week at Hersheypark Stadium.
Central Catholic lost 31-24 in overtime to St. Joseph’s Prep Saturday in the 6A semifinals.
Former Jeannette high school and Ohio State standout Terrelle Pryor was critically injured in a stabbing incident involving his girlfriend at the apartment on Pittsburgh’s North Side early Saturday. Both are facing charges, with Pryor’s girlfriend being charged with attempted homicide and aggravated assault. Pryor reached the NFL, but is currently an unsigned free agent.
The Pitt women’s volleyball team were selected as the #6-overall seed in the NCAA volleybal tournament which begins this week. The Panthers finished the regular season 29-1 and earned the highest seed in program history. They will host Howard this Friday in the first round.
