The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Chicago Cubs 2-1 Sunday at Wrigley Field for their first victory of the season against the Cubs. Gerrit Cole pitched eight shut-out innings, and Jung Ho Kang had the game-winning home run. Kang also drove in Startling Marte with the game’s first run, after Chicago starter Jon Lester held the Pirates hit-less into the seventh inning.
The Pirates have returned home and host the Atlanta Braves beginning tonight at PNC Park. First pitch is 7:05pm. The Bucs are 19-17 overall and tied for second place in the National League Central Division with St. Louis. Both are eight games behind the first-place Cubs.
The Braves enter tonight’s game 9-27 overall, the worst record in the Major League’s.
