The city of Butler will appeal the recently reassessed taxable value of a downtown building.
Butler City Council voted unanimously Thursday to appeal the decision by Butler County to lower the taxable value of the former Broad Street Elementary School following a challenge by the Butler School Board.
In an effort to encourage offers for their closed buildings, the Butler School District petitioned the county for a reassessment that would lower the taxes to be owed on the building, using one of two assessments the school board had done.
Even though it will cost an undetermined amount of money to appeal, Mayor Tom Donaldson believes the action must be taken in order to protect against future losses.
