A water main break delayed the opening of a new grocery store in the city of Butler.
Discount grocer Save-A-Lot opened late Thursday afternoon in Pullman Square after a water main break delayed the store’s opening in the morning, according to store Manager LeeAnn Meals.
Company officials said the break was unrelated to construction.
Save-A-Lot bills itself as a full-service grocer offering fresh-cut meat, fresh fruits and vegetables. The store will offer its own exclusive brands, in addition to national brands, which differentiates it from other discount grocers in the area, according to the company.
And, the company has committed to hiring local residents, according to Meals, of Butler.
“All of the people who will be working in this store will reside in Butler,” Meals said in an interview Thursday. “This is a community store and we’re choosing to keep it that way.”
Meals said the store will employ between 15 and 30 employees, depending on the volume of business the store does.
The city of Butler has been without a full-service grocery store for more than a year after Friedman’s on West Brady Street closed.
