Butler City Council plans to introduce an ordinance that would aim to crack down on drugs by amending the definition of a “Disorderly House.”
Councilman Jeff Smith proposed amending the definition to include illegal drug activity.
“It would give the police one more tool to use in their fight against the drugs,” Smith said during a city meeting on Tuesday night.
The current definition of a “Disorderly House” includes places where people live or gather that has illegal drinking, gambling or prostitution. Violations of this ordinance would allow owners and residents of a “Disorderly House” to be charged and fined.
Drug use in Butler remains one of the main complaints residents have, according to Smith, and this change would be just another way that the city is working to combat that activity.
“The biggest concern the residents talked about during the campaign and just on the streets are drugs in the city and I think that this is a place where we’re taking an actual step to make it less appealing to do drugs in Butler.”
This first reading of this change will be voted on during a city meeting on Thursday night and could be finalized at the July meeting of Butler City Council.
