Butler City Council is moving forward with the idea of selling police services to areas currently without traffic enforcement.
At Thursday night’s meeting, Mayor Tom Donaldson received approval from council to enter into formal discussions with Summit Township or any other neighboring municipalities who express interest.
Councilman Bill May voted against the proposal.
Any potential agreement negotiated would go before council for final approval.
The selling of traffic patrol services in 10-hour per week blocks for $25,000 per year would allow the city to defray costs they are already paying to the force. State police would continue to handle calls that came in for other incidents in areas outside the city.
According to Donaldson, the first priority of officers would remain in the city and any agreement would include a mutual exit clause.
