The Butler City Police Department will start off 2019 without a familiar face.
Officials say that over the weekend, K-9 officer Gunner passed away. The department says that Gunner, who was actively assisting officers until just a few days before his passing, was taken to a veterinarian late Thursday night after falling ill. He was then laid to rest on Friday.
The seven-year-old K-9 officer had been with the department for several years, and was paired with handler Lt. Brian Grooms.
Condolences may be sent to the Butler City Police Station at 200 West New Castle Street. Donations to the Butler Canine fund are also being accepted to help the City acquire a new K-9 officer.
