The City of Butler is going after grant money from the state that would be able to greatly expand the scope of a streetscape project currently in the planning stages.
The project will include moving Main Street utility lines underground, new street lighting, and planting trees on Main Street, according to Butler City Mayor Ben Smith.
Council is hoping money raised by the city streetlight tax, combined with a county infrastructure loan, can be leveraged into a state Multimodel Transportation Fund Grant that would pull in $70 in state money for every $30 in local funds.
Once approved, council will submit their grant application. The state is expected to announce the grant awards in November. Even without the grant, the project will move forward, just on a smaller scale.

Benches that have been given by residents in memory of a loved one is a situation the city is trying to work through since some of the benches may not fit with the new streetscape plan.
“There are about 37 benches with plaques on them. That needs to get worked through. You can’t do a streetscape project and work around 37 benches,” Councilman Jeff Smith said during a meeting on Tuesday.
Smith suggested asking the people who donated the memorial benches if they cold be placed in parks, on a different bench or if the plague could be placed on a tree.
