The Butler City Fire Department could use a large federal grant to help pay for the hiring of additional firefighters.
The over $600,000 SAFER Grant- which stands for Staffing For Adequate Fire and Emergency Response- would allow the city partial reimbursement for four additional positions over three years.
Hiring four additional firefighters would put five on each shift (instead of the four that are required) so that any call-offs would not automatically result in overtime expenses. Butler City Council needs to officially accept the funds within 30 days, which could take place at their meeting on Thursday.
Also at that meeting, Council is expected to approve a job description and salary for the position of joint Fire Chief, which will be shared with Butler Township. Council could also take action on a motion that would ask city landlords to cooperate with police in cases where tenants are suspected of illegal drug activity.
