The Butler City Fire Department has been awarded a large grant to help their equipment meet two compliance standards.
Butler City Fire Chief Nick Ban said the grant is for $127,585. The city will be responsible for a 5 percent match, or about $6,000.
The department has always submitted an application for the nationwide competitive grant from the Federal Assistance to Firefighters program, according to Ban. The department has received close to $1 million worth of assistance through the years.
This year, money will be spent on improved equipment to comply with revised standards.
“There’s been some new mandates that have come out and our units that we currently have are over 10 years old so this funding stream will be used to replace those,” he said.
In addition to the 20 breathing units, the department continues to pursue other opportunities such as the Safer Grant from the Department of Homeland Security and the State Fire Commissioners grants.
