Residents in the City of Butler are still able to recycle glass, per the city’s current contract with Waste Management.
But, the trash hauler seems to be telling residents that glass can’t be recycled, and city officials are wondering why.
“Waste Management sent out a brochure to residents and they crossed out ‘glass’ from the list of items they will pick up for recycling. The problem is they signed a three year-agreement with the city of Butler, and in that agreement, the definition of recyclables includes clear glass and colored glass,” Butler City Councilman Jeff Smith said during a meeting Tuesday.
Butler City Council has directed city Solicitor Tom Breth to draft a letter to Waste Management notifying them that a failure to accept glass will be considered a breach of contract.
If Waste Management is unable or unwilling to abide by the agreement, council could choose to enter into discussions about modifying the contract to possibly include a monetary discount.
“If they’re not going to recycle glass, then we shouldn’t be paying for it,” Smith said.
The City of Butler’s contract with Waste Management began in 2018 and will continue through 2020.
