Pennsylvania raked in an extra $12.8 million in cigarette tax revenue in August compared to the same month a year ago.
That comes as the $1-per-pack tax increase took effect in August, which was the state’s largest single tax hike on smokers since the 30s.
Experts say it’s too early to draw conclusions about how the tax increase is affecting consumer behavior. Some research shows that for every 10 percent increase in the cost of buying cigarettes, consumption drops by about 4 percent.
