A Butler woman is facing multiple charges as a result of alleged child abuse.
According to a criminal complaint, 33-year-old Tonya Schmidt has been charged with felony aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of children as well as reckless endangerment and simple assault. She allegedly deliberately burned the hands of her six year old step daughter on a stove and hit her with a large spoon.
An investigation began January 4th when Children and Youth Services filed a report and removed the girl from the home due to multiple bruises and second degree burns. Once in foster care, the girl was interviewed at Children’s Hospital last week before charges were filed against Schmidt Wednesday.
Schmidt is currently in the Butler County Prison awaiting a preliminary hearing Monday.
