The 2015 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup now moves from Delaware to North Carolina for Saturday night’s Bank of America 500. It’s the opening race in the Contender Round with twelve drivers hoping to avoid falling out of title contention when the field is further reduced to eight in three weeks. All twelve drivers have had their championship points reset to three thousand, and any one of the twelve that wins a race in the next three weeks will automatically advance to the Eliminator Round of eight that opens November 1st at Martinsville Speedway
Chase drivers have won the fall race at Charlotte in nine of the eleven years the post-season title format has been in place. Jimmie Johnson, the top seed in this year’s Chase who was eliminated this past weekend at Dover, leads all drivers with seven wins at Charlotte. Of the drivers still in contention for the 2015 championship, Jeff Gordon has the most victories at Charlotte with five.
Austin Theriault (TERRY-oh) is recovering from a back injury suffered in an accident during Saturday night’s Camping World Truck Series race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Theriault was transported to a local hospital, where he was diagnosed with a compression fracture of the lower back. He was released and returned to North Carolina, and is seeing an orthopedic specialist for further treatment. The Truck Series is idle the next three weeks.
