After agreeing to a new contract last month, transfers and hiring are underway in the Butler Area School District Maintenance and Custodial department.
According to Butler Superintendent Dr. Brian White, the total number of district employees in that department dropped from 69 full-time and 13 part-time workers in 2016 to 54 full-time and 8 part-time workers this year. Five of those part-time positions are currently vacant so the district plans to do more hiring in order to get staffing where it is needed.
The district had put off hiring new employees to jobs in those areas during the summer until a new contract covering changes in compensation and benefits was agreed to last month. At the school board meeting earlier this week, a total of 17 custodial or maintenance employees either had a change of status or a transfer of assignment.
Although the number of employees was not part of the district’s contract negotiations with the custodial employees union, the district’s Business Manager is working with the Maintenance Supervisor to make sure that personnel are assigned correctly.
