The Butler City Police Department needs new patrol cars.
“We’ve had an onslaught of issues with the cars…they are falling apart,” Butler City Police Deputy Chief David Adam told Butler City Council during a meeting Tuesday night.
The department needs four new police cruisers. Deputy Chief Adam and Chief Ron Brown wrote a letter to Mayor Tom Donaldson and city council stating that the vehicles are “a grave safety concern for all officers driving them.”
Mayor Tom Donaldson agreed, and noted that the aging cruisers could jeopardize the safety of city residents as well.
“If we get less than four new vehicles, we’re playing with fire because it will affect the basic ability to respond to a call,” Donaldson said Tuesday. “When you get down past all the other safety issues, it’s the ability to be able to respond to a call.”
Only one replacement vehicle has been purchased for the department since 2013.
