Lackluster defensive play continues to haunt Pittsburgh Pirates starter Gerrit Cole, as the Pirates lost to the St. Louis Cardinals 4-2 last night, and have now fallen seven games behind the Cardinals in the N.L. Central. Cole allowed three earned runs while pitching into the sixth inning. His record fell to 14-6. The Pirates committed two errors behind Cole, but also had two other defensive blunders that were not counted as errors, which gave St. Louis their second consecutive victory over the Bucs. Gregory Polanco went 3-for-3 last night for the Pirates. Andrew McCutchen and Jung Ho Kang had two hits apiece last night. McCutchen drove in both Pirate runs with home run and triple. But, the Pirates were 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position.
