Cardinal Donald Wuerl is expected to meet with Pope Francis to reportedly discuss leaving the church- either by retiring or resigning.
Wuerl is currently the leader of the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C. and was a former Bishop of the Pittsburgh Diocese. He began to be publicly criticized last month after a Pennsylvania Grand Jury report said more than 300 priests had abused over 1,000 children, dating back to the 1940s.
Wuerl’s name was mentioned several times in the report for allegedly not doing enough to remove some predator priests from ministry. Not long after the report came out, Wuerl’s name was removed from Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic High School in Cranberry Township, Butler County.
It’s unknown when the meeting between the Pope and Wuerl will take place. In a letter sent to priests on Tuesday, Wuerl said it is clear to him that some decision on his part is “essential so the church can move forward.”
