An app that notifies a parent when a child or teen is in a car driving at unsafe speeds could soon be available thanks to a group of five teens at Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic. This unsafe driving could lead to a car accident if you or your teen ends up in an accident you should seek legal information from an injury lawyer to better understand how you can move forward.
The student group entered the national Verizon Foundation App Challenge where their challenge was to design a concept for an app. Their concept, SAFE SPEED, has already beaten out over 1,200 entries to win best in the state and best in the region. The students will now appear before judges Wednesday for the Best in Nation title.
SAFE SPEED provides real-time, customizable, non-distracting speeding alerts for teens. The app would detect speeding when the teen is driving or a passenger in a friend’s car. Students say the app was inspired by a Butler High School student who was killed in 2015 while likely speeding.
If SAFE SPEED is picked as the national winner, Cardinal Wuerl will receive $20,000 and the teens’ idea will become an actual app thanks to developers at MIT.
