The Pennsylvania Department of Banking and Securities is encouraging holiday shoppers to watch out for card skimming devices.
Criminals place card skimmers over authentic card readers on ATM machines, gas pumps, or other payment processing machines in retail stores.
This allows thieves to steal credit or debit card information when the card is swiped and a hidden camera can record Personal Identification Numbers.
The state advises those out and about this holiday season to closely examine the card reader slot and surrounding areas to see if anything looks out of place or loose. People should also check bank and credit card statements frequently to catch fraudulent activity as soon as possible.
