Through the efforts of volunteers, community members and local businesses, more than 1,500 Christmas stockings were delivered this season to people in Butler, Lawrence and Mercer counties who are fighting cancer.
The ‘Hang Tough’ stocking program is locally spearheaded by the Butler Radio Network and Schneider’s One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning.
Stockings are filled with items patients might find useful during their treatments- such as hand lotion, a journal, a gift card for gas, or crossword puzzles to help pass the time. Several businesses served as ‘drop-off’ locations for the stockings; and they were then picked up by volunteers and delivered to local treatment facilities.
“We just want them to know that there’s people that are hanging tough with them through their battle, and cancer is a battle,” volunteer Sharon Schneider said in an interview.
During some of the drop-offs, volunteers went above and beyond- visiting with patients and even singing Christmas carols.
“It’s just a glorious feeling to share a smile with these patients, even if it’s just for five seconds,” Schneider said. “There’s no describing it.”
Mrs. Claus even came along for some of the deliveries.
A total of 1,505 stockings were delivered this year.
