The number of cancer diagnoses is on the rise.
According to the American Cancer Society, there will be 81,000 new cancer cases in Pennsylvania next year alone.
That doesn’t surprise Dr. David Parda from the Allegheny Health Network Cancer Institute.
“Our cure rates are increasing and death rates are decreasing from cancer but the incidents from cancer are increasing from the aging population,” he said.
As more people are diagnosed with cancer, Dr. Parda says the need for better cancer screening, treatment and surveillance will increase accordingly, which is one of the reasons he says the Allegheny Health Network is building a Butler Cancer Institute.
“We need to have more of these services in the community and closer to patients’ homes,” he said in an interview.
The AHN Cancer Institute-Butler is under construction in the Pullman Business Park and is expected to open early next year.
