Butler Mayor-Elect Ben Smith officially began his term on Tuesday morning.
He was administered the oath of office inside the Butler City Building by Magisterial District Judge William Fullerton. He begins a four-year term replacing former Mayor Tom Donaldson.
Two councilmen were also sworn-in. Jeff Smith begins his first term serving the city. Ken Bonus begins his first full term after replacing a retiring councilmember mid-way through last term.
City controller Gretchen Ehlman was also sworn-in.
“We’re all excited to lead the city and see some progress,” Smith said soon after calling his first meeting to order. “I want you (the public) to be a part of it- not just come along for the ride.”
During the meeting department assignments were also decided.
Mayor Smith will oversee the department of public affairs and bureau of police. Councilman Mike Walters will oversee the accounts and finance department. Councilman Jeff Smith will lead the department of parks and public property. Councilman Corey Roche will head the department of public safety and bureau of fire. And, Councilman Ken Bonus will oversee the department of streets and public improvements.
