Butler Township is moving forward with hiring a new police officer as soon as their budget will allow.
The township commissioners agreed to establish an interview schedule to fill the position by August 22nd.
Due to the recent retirement of a longtime officer, Police Chief John Hays has had to juggle staffing in a way that limits police involvement with community programs. Until the retired officer is replaced, the township is operating with 20 officers.
Hays told the commissioners that due to an increase in calls for service as well as new development in the township, additional officers would be beneficial. Although Hays says the current number of officers meets the needs of the community at a minimum, some police officer to population ratios recommend an additional five officers for the municipality.
