A local police department is donating some equipment no longer needed to help Ukrainian people defend themselves and their country.
Twelve pieces of expired body armor no longer able to be used by Butler Township Police will be transferred to Ukraine through Saints Peter and Paul Orthodox Church and Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church in Carnegie.
Earlier this month, Butler Township Commissioners approved a request by Police Chief John Hays to donate the Point Blank Vision vests which originally cost about $800 each when purchased five years ago.
“A couple years ago, when we first started donating them, we had quite a few. To get rid of these, its quite costly so this is a good way for any agency that has them, it’s a good purpose.”
Butler Township anticipates donating four more pieces of expired body armor later this year but Hays hopes that they will no longer be needed in Ukraine at that time.
