Butler Township is keeping the same formula as last year for the dispersal of funds to their three volunteer fire departments.
Last year, the township awarded a total of $328,000 to the departments with Butler Township Fire District Station 3 receiving 56 percent and the other two districts (Mercer and South Butler) each getting 22 percent. This year, that total will increase by about $10,000.
The commissioners had discussed making a determination for the next two years but decided to leave it at one year so that they can form a grant writing committee.
One member of each department will be chosen to meet on a regular basis with Commissioner Jim Lokhaiser, Jr., Township manager Ed Kirkwood and Fire Marshal Larry Christy. The goal of the committee will be for all three departments to apply for as many grants as possible so needs can be met without raising the fire tax.
