Students at a local school are coming together to make the holiday season a bit brighter for troops overseas.
Kara Hovancik, a sixth grade teacher at Butler Middle School, organized the collection.
“As a sixth grade, we are packaging over 100 care packages for the troops overseas for the holiday season. Our sixth grade student council has taken the lead on helping to put all the information and materials together but the whole sixth grade has brought in items to donate to put into the packages.”
Friday around 1 p.m., the 911th Security Forces out of Pittsburgh Air Force Base will be at the school to help the students load their packages onto a truck.
Hovancik became aware of the program through her husband who is a reservist at the base. The packages contain a wide variety of items.
“Everything inside the packs are anything from puzzle books to mints, gum, chips, snacks, granola bars, water mixes, all kinds of good snacks,” Hovancik explained.
American Legion Post 117 in Butler has donated over $1,700 to cover all shipping costs for the packages.
