It’s graduation day for Butler Area School District students.
The district says there are 517 students in this year’s senior class, which by the end of the day, will have their diplomas in hand and be looking forward to life’s next step.
There will be two commencement theme speakers at tonight’s graduation, both of whom are students.
Lillian Ford and Camden Seybert had to audition to speak before the graduating class, which Seybert says made him a little bit nervous.
“I was a little bit intimidated by it, because I’m not really big into public speaking,” Seybert said with a laugh.
However, Seybert prepared a speech, auditioned in front of a panel of teachers and will give one of two speeches in front of thousands of students, teachers and family members.
Seybert’s speech will surround this year’s commencement theme, which is “A Moment in History.”
“I’m going to talk about my moment in history at Butler,” he said.
Seybert is a relatively new Butler student- he transferred to the district in 10th grade. He says the principals, teachers and students are wonderful.
“The three principals are awesome people,” Seybert said. “I’ve met my favorite teachers at Butler, some of which I would argue are the best teachers in the state. When you go to high school, kids can be very cliquey, but that’s not the case here. I was met with open arms. The kids at Butler are kind.”
During Butler’s commencement tonight, students who have achieved a 4.2 or higher grade-point average will be specially recognized as honor students with distinction.
