There is a long list of capital projects that need to be completed within the Butler Area School District.
School board members got a first-hand look earlier this week at the issues during a five-stop facilities tour.
A lot of work needs done at the Butler Senior High School, including improvements to the athletic facilities and auditorium.
“We’re very inadequate in a lot of areas,” Bill Mylan, athletic director for the Butler Area School District, said Monday.
Problems in the gymnasium include peeling paint from ductwork, floors in need of resurfacing and leaks under the Senior High pool, according to Mylan. The district also needs more locker rooms, better fitness equipment and upgrades to the rifle range facility, which is currently located under the Senior High auditorium.
Superintendent Dr. Brian White pointed out issues in the auditorium itself- including asbestos tile that is coming loose.
“The seats in the auditorium are not in bad repair but the seats are going to have to come up to do the work,” he said. “This is not going to be glamorous but this is unfortunately stuff that has to be done at some point.”
District administrators also remain committed to improving the safety of students across the district.
At least several of these projects will be tackled this summer. To pay for these needed repairs and changes, the Butler School Board voted last year to borrow about $9.5 million through a bond issue.
