A new Butler Township program to help get young people more involved with local government has chosen the first student to be involved.
Butler High School Senior Joe Atkinson has been chosen as the first student representative for Butler Township.
Commissioner Dave Zarnick came up with the idea of a Student Municipal Representative Program and asked for help from Butler Area School District Superintendent Dr. Brian White to get it off the ground.
Atkinson expressed an interest in learning more about how local government works and he was referred this opportunity by a Butler teacher. Student representatives will have a chance to give updates during meetings about items of interest or concern to local youth as well as report back to class about what was discussed by the commissioners.
