A Butler School District student is the first student representative to sit on the Butler Township board of commissioners.
The program was started to give young people a peek into local government, and to hopefully foster more civic engagement by teens.
Senior Joe Atkinson was appointed in August and sat on the board for his first official meeting last week. His appointment will last through the end of this school year.
“The Butler Township Board of Commissioners always support initiatives to foster more interest in civic education and encourage students and young adults to consider careers in public administration. As stated in our program,” said Cheryl McNeill, Assistant Township Manager. “I’m hoping that this program will flourish over time and become an integral and desired addition to the civics curriculum at the high school.”
Butler City Council is doing a similar program with a local student this year as well.
