Fewer teachers than originally anticipated will lose their positions at Butler Area School District this fall.
Originally, 26.5 teaching positions were eliminated when the district crafted its preliminary budget last month. However, due to retirements and movement between positions, officials say four full-time teachers and one part-time teacher will now have their positions suspended.
The Butler school board approved the moves during Monday night’s meeting by a vote of 5-2. Board members Bill Halle and Neil Convery voted against the move due to their disagreements of the incentives provided to encourage teachers to accept early retirement.
Assistant Superintendent Dr. Brian Slamecka pointed out that teacher movement is a fluid process that could further change depending on a variety of factors before the 2017-18 year begins.
