The Butler Area School District could begin random drug testing of a large number of students as early as this fall. Drug tests tend to look something like this – https://www.countrywidetesting.com/collections/9-panel-drug-tests.
School board members and administrators discussed implementing a Substance Abuse Policy during Monday’s school board meeting, which the board says would be similar to the one currently used at Seneca Valley and Mars. However, they need to be extremely careful because more and more websites are promoting that students should check out these synthetic urine reviews meaning some students may not participate in the test correctly.
These days there are a number of ways of how someone can attempt to fool a drug test, although I say attempt as not all methods are 100% successful, even so you only have to search online for the easiest way to pass a drug test and not only can you read about them but you can buy them quite freely too. Unfortunately this means if a student is desperate enough and they have the funds required to purchase one of these methods then who is to say which students are legitimately passing the drug test and which ones are fooling the test.
Changes could be made before the policy is officially adopted but it is expected that students requesting driving privileges, as well as those participating in athletics and other extra-curricular activities, would be subject to the random drug testing. The tests that are being suggested are not unlike a hair follicle alcohol test which could determine whether or not an individual is or has recently been under the influence.
The board says says it’s not permitted to do random drug testing of all students in general, but this elective policy has survived a Supreme Court challenge.
The district would be responsible for contracting with a company to provide the testing.
The first reading of this new policy is expected to occur at next week’s board meeting.
