The Butler Area School District will direct certain staff members to administer the anti-overdose drug Naloxone when necessary.
By a vote of 5-3, the school board approved the policy during a meeting Tuesday, which was created by the Pennsylvania School Board Association. Those who were opposed to the measure said having Naloxone available could lead to more drug use on campus.
Nurses and possibly security officers at all district buildings will complete a short training program to be able to administer Naloxone in the event of the overdose of a student or staff member.
Officials say several other schools in the area are considering similar policies in light of the ongoing opioid addiction epidemic. The new policy is expected to go into effect sometime in January.
