Butler native Admiral Jonathan Greenert has officially retired from his position as the head of the navy.
Greenert, 62, was the chief of naval operations for four years. His position meant he was also the principal naval advisor to the president and was on the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He officially retired Thursday. Admiral John Richardson was sworn in Friday as his replacement and became the 31st chief of naval operations, the Navy’s most senior officer.
Greenert was back in his hometown last year (November 2014) when he sat in the audience as the United States Navy Band performed at the Butler Intermediate High School. He is a Butler High School graduate. Several of his family members still live in the area.
