Butler City Mayor Tom Donaldson has responded to a formal condemnation by the International Association of Firefighters.
In a statement, Donaldson said it is his responsibility to look out for the best interests of the City of Butler.
“I have done that since taking office in 2014,” he states. “I am and always have been an advocate of public safety.”
The national firefighters union censured Donaldson after they claim his has administration attempted to “implement civil service rules and regulations that conflict with provisions of the local union’s collective bargaining agreement.” The mayor says city council voted last year to update the civil service rules and the city’s police union has since voted to accept the change, which has allowed for subsequent promotions to be made in that department.
The mayor also claims that he did not demote former Fire Chief Nick Ban as the censure states. According to Donaldson, Ban retired before the demotion.
The IAFF censure process is a way for affiliates to condemn actions taken against them through supporting documentation, examination, debate and a vote by 2,500 members at their yearly convention.
IAFF Local 114 represents 17 members of the Butler City Fire Department.
