The Butler high school Hall of Fame will induct five former athletes and one coach in a ceremony tomorrow night.
Mike Seybert was the girls Track head coach from 1990 to 2003 and compiled a record of 172-14 accumulating six WPIAL titles and his 1998 girl’s team was the state runner-up. Seybert also coached cross country and assisted with the boy’s track and field team.
Athletes being honored include:
–Former All-Section football stand-out Donnie Brown, who went on to play at Wake Forest. Brown also was the strength coach for the St. Louis Cardinals football team from 1975-1985.
–Mickey Haley who earned three letters each in gymnastics and diving from 1966-69. Haley was a state champion in the long horse vault and was a state bronze medalist in diving. Haley accepted a scholarship to the University of Pittsburgh, but suffered a career-ending injury prior to his freshman year.
–Also being honored is another gymnast—Cliff Diehl who was a state champion in the parallel bars in 1964 and 1965. Diehl went on to receive Big 10 conference honors at Michigan State.
–Howard Hammonds was a state and WPIAL champion in Cross Country in 1961, the first year the sport was formed in Butler. He was also a school record holder in the Track & Field mile event. Hammonds went on to coach in college and led the Saudi Arabian National track and Field Team from 1976-1979.
–and wrestler T.J. McCance who wrestled from 1998-2002 at Butler and became the first wrestler to win more than 100 matches. McCance won 10 individual tournament championships and reached the WPIAL and state championships. He became the first wrestler to compete at the NCAA Division I level, becoming the team captain at Clarion in 2005-2006.
The inductees will be welcomed at the Senior high school cafeteria, and then recognized prior to the Butler-North Hills football game.
