As part of the 50th anniversary celebration of the Super Bowl, the NFL is sending a golden football to every high school in the country that had a graduate on a Super Bowl roster…that means two footballs have made their way to Butler High School.
Butler School District Athletic Director Bill Mylan said the footballs honoring Butler graduates Terry Hanratty and Rich Saul arrived last week. Both played in Super Bowl games, Hanratty for the Pittsburgh Steelers; Saul for the Los Angeles Rams.
“They’re obviously all gold and have the Super Bowl 50 logo along with the players’ names,” Mylan said.
The footballs will officially be dedicated to Butler High during a home football game next fall.
The graduate could have either been a player or head coach in one of the last 49 super bowls. The initiative is called the Super Bowl High School Honor Roll, meant to recognize schools and communities that contributed to Super Bowl history and positively impacted the game of football.
The NFL Foundation, which gave $1 million for the campaign, will also provide schools with the opportunity to apply for grants of up to $5,000 to support their football programs, along with a new character education curriculum.
The highest number of golden footballs a state will receive is California with 432. Pennsylvania is the fifth state on the list with 148.
