The Butler County Veteran of the Year will be recognized at a luncheon coming up this weekend.
Robert “Bob” Ripper, 69, of Fairview Township is this year’s recipient.
“I’m very honored and it’s really humbling the number of people who come up to me and mention things and say you did this for me or my brother, my mother,” he said.
Ripper served on active duty in the army as a communications operator during the Vietnam War between 1965 and 1967.
Ripper graduated from Karns City High School in 1964 and he has been extremely active in the community since returning from the war. Ripper has been extensively involved in Boy Scouts, the Hillview Cemetery, Chicora Volunteer Fire Company, and Woodsmen of the World. Ripper also serves as the Chaplain of American Legion Post 642 and lives his life according to a simple idea.
“You treat people the way you want to be treated and that’s half the battle,” Ripper explained.
The lunch will take place this Saturday (11/14) at noon at American Legion Post 778.
It is open to the public and tickets are $10. Ripper will also participate in the annual Veterans Day parade in Butler beginning at 10:40 a.m. Wednesday.
