Butler County is filing a lawsuit against 15 telephone service providers.
The suit alleges that the companies failed to collect nearly $11 million in 911 fees that were due to the county over the last six years.
There is no public audit to make sure funds are lawfully collected and the county believes that some companies may have not billed commercial customers what was due in order to keep prices low.
The county spent over $3 million to support their 911 system in 2014 and about half of that amount was taken from the county’s general fund because 911 fees from telephone companies were not enough.
The county will be represented by the law firm of Dilworth Paxson and receive assistance from Phone Recovery Services for data analysis. Neither company will be paid unless the suit is successful.
