The Butler County Sports Hall of Fame 58th annual banquet has been set for Saturday, April 26th at Butler County Community College, and will honor eight new inductees.
The honorees include:
–Butler county tri-athlete Joella Baker, a Duquesne University graduate, who founded Get Fit Families in Zelienople, and has competed in 15 marathons and five ultra-marathons despite being diagnosed with Lupus in 2001.
–Jeff Christy, who owns nine school records at Freeport high school, and set a state record for points scored in a football season, before moving on to play at Pitt, and eventually the NFL. He won Super Bowl with Tampa Bay and reached the Pro Bowl three times.
–Butler swimming standout Larry Dillon, who competed at the YMCA nationals and eventually the NAIA nationals while attending Westminster College, despite a serious physical condition.
–Basketball player and long-time coach Joe Lewandowski, who starred at Butler County Community College and Slippery Rock University and eventually played professionally in Denmark. Joe also has coached at BC and Point Park collegiately as well as Butler and Deer Lakes high schools. More recently, he coached the men’s Team USA 3-on-3 basketball team at the Summer Olympics.
–Art Monteleone, who has been a state level sports official in football and basketball for 54 years, and is still active today. Monteleone was previously involved in youth sports-including being the head coach for the Institute Hill Midget football team.
–Melissa Sopher Williams, a stand-out hurdler and relay runner in track and field at Slippery Rock high school and University.
–Scott Stoner, longtime Butler high school wrestling head coach. Scott won more than 80 matches at SRU and currently ranks first in career wins among active Pennsylvania high school wrestling coaches.
–and three-time Lernerville Speedway track champion Tom Phillips, who now has been coaching Freeport high school volleyball for 24 years, and has led the Yellow Jacket girls volleyball program to 18 consecutive section titles, seven WPIAL titles and two state championships.
