Finances at the Butler County Prison will not be affected much by the upcoming transfer of about 20 state inmates.
According to Warden Joe DeMore, “Revenue-wise, having 50 of them here, our revenue went up but over the last year, there was times we only had 30 of them or 28 of them so there’s really no big impact on that. We were just gaining extra money with being able to hold more than the 30.”
DeMore told our newsroom that the contract with the state has been to house 30 state inmates since the prison opened. The revenue received from the state for that number is what is included in the prison budget. Additional revenue from housing up to 20 more state inmates has resulted in a budget surplus in the past.
But, due to fewer state prisoners needing to be housed, the extra prisoners being housed in Butler will be transitioned to other facilities over the next several months. Butler is not the only facility affected by the lower state prison population.
“Some of the county jails local to us lost their inmates completely. Some of them got their numbers cut from 70 down to 20. There were some big changes for a lot of places,” DeMore explained.
DeMore does not expect further changes to the state contract in the near future.
