Over 1,500 motorists in Butler County are among nearly 11,000 across the state that could have their vehicle registrations suspended for failure to pay overdue turnpike toll expenses.
“The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission is alerting motorists with outstanding toll violations that the commonwealth will have the authority to suspend motor vehicle registrations starting August 4th,” Mark Compton, PA Turnpike CEO, said Wednesday.
Act 165 of 2016 will take effect next month and give the state’s tolling agencies an enforcement tool to go after over $17 million in unpaid invoices and violation fees.
But there is good news for motorists who are at risk of having driving privileges suspended. Anyone who takes advantage of the state’s partial amnesty program before the law goes into effect can avoid additional fees.
“For the next month, they can pay their outstanding tolls and the penalty fee will be waived,” Compton said. “In fact, penalty fees will be waived during this time for all those with outstanding tolls, not just those at the highest levels.”
Those 1,500 Butler County motorists owe more than $105,000 in outstanding toll invoices.
