When you head to the polls to vote this November, you may be permitted to take a “ballot selfie.”
The Butler County Commissioners will vote on a new policy next week that would permit voters to take cell phones inside a voting precinct and snap a picture of themselves after they’ve cast a ballot.
“This is a thing people do apparently,” county solicitor Mike English said during a meeting Wednesday.
The policy would prohibit people from taking photos of other voters and their ballots.
The county currently has a policy in place restricting the use of audio and video devices inside precincts. The new policy is a reaction to federal court case decisions and guidelines from the attorney general’s office that permit “ballot selife” practices.
County officials say this new policy would be the county ‘simply keeping up with the times.’
“We haven’t had any problems with cell phone usage inside voting precincts,” English said.
The Butler County Commissioners will vote on the proposed Voting Precinct Mobile Phone Policy at their next public meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 19 at 10 a.m.

Butler County employees could also soon have to follow a social media policy.
The Butler County commissioners will vote on creating the proposed policy next week.
The board says the county does not currently have a social media policy in place and officials believe it would be best to have guidelines set on what is, and what is not, permitted.
“We are catching up,” Butler Co. Commissioner Leslie Osche said.
County solicitor Mike English said the creation of the policy is not in response to any issues with employees and social media.
