Counties across the state will divide over $55 million in funding for volunteer firefighters.
“Everybody knows the importance of firefighters. Every single one of them is a hero. They help keep our communities safe. This money is just part of the piece to how they perform their function,” Pennsylvania Auditor General Eugene DePasquale.
Butler County’s share comes to over $1 million, which will go to the Volunteer Firefighters’ Relief Associations of municipalities within the county.
Relief association contributions help to pay for needed equipment, training and insurance. According to DePasquale, volunteers are incredibly important to the mission of protecting residents.
“What’s important to note is that obviously in our major urban areas, we have paid firefighters, but in a pretty big chunk of Pennsylvania, which most people don’t realize- it’s about 90 percent of the state- volunteer firefighters are the people that keep us safe every single day,” DePasquale said.
This funding comes from a two percent tax on out-of-state casualty and fire insurance premiums.
