The Butler County Prison will likely implement some new policies following the sickening of six workers on Tuesday.
Warden Joe DeMore says he will look at the prison’s mail policy. He also says the prison will also be getting some Hazmat gear- including gloves and mask– for corrections officers to wear during cell searches.
Four corrections officers and two prison nurses became ill after coming into contact with a suspicious substance during a search of an inmate’s cell. DeMore believes the substance was synthetic marijuana, also known as K2 or Spice, but that’s not known for sure. The substance has been sent to a lab for specific testing.
He says several other jails have been dealing with this same specific problem- inmates smuggling in K2.
“The inmates are coming up with the same methods,” he said Wednesday in an interview. He noted similar incidents have happened in recent months in Allegheny, Mercer and Greene counties.
The Butler County commissioners- Leslie Osche, Kim Geyer and Kevin Boozel- asked for prayers for the prison workers during their meeting on Wednesday. All three said they remain confident in the security at the prison and agreed with DeMore that this is a problem facing many local jails.
