There is now a policy in place dictating how the 600-some employees of Butler County can use social media while at work.
“The purpose of this policy is to set employee expectations and to establish guidelines for appropriate use of social networks,” reads the two-page policy.
The Butler County board of commissioners say the policy sets expectations for employee use of social media while they’re at work, not in their personal lives.
“It’s just a reminder to keep it professional,” Butler County Commissioner Kevin Boozel said Wednesday.
Commissioner Leslie Osche said the new policy isn’t in response to any one situation or problem.
“This is something a lot of companies are addressing. We’re probably a little bit behind the times and I think we’re catching up,” Osche said.
The commissioners say the new policy does not infringe on First Amendment rights and that they’re not looking at what county employees are posting when they’re not at work and on their own devices.
But, Commissioner Kim Geyer urges employees to be responsible regardless.
“As our solicitor reminds us, when you type something on the computer, you might as well put up a billboard on Route 8. It doesn’t go away,” Geyer said.
The two-page policy states county equipment is to only be used for legitimate work, not for personal messaging or blogging. And while using social media for work, employees shouldn’t use inappropriate language or transmit obscene materials.
