The Butler City Police Department is beginning the New Year without its K9 officer.
Gunner, the department’s 7-year-old canine, was euthanized Friday.
Police say the dog last assisted in an arrest on Christmas Eve, but fell ill on Dec. 27 due to medical issues. He was found to have many internal issues that were irreparable, according to police Chief Bob O’Neill.
“He will be sorely missed,” O’Neill said.
K9 Officer Gunner joined the department in 2012, and was the city’s only current police dog. He was handled by Lt. Brian Grooms.
“Lt. Grooms was the handler and best friend,” O’Neill said in a press release.
Any condolences may be sent to the Butler City Police Station at 200 West New Castle Street, Butler PA 16001. The Butler K9 fund is accepting donations to help the city with the acquisition of a new K9 officer. Those donations can be sent care of the Butler City Police Canine fund.
“We are thankful and grateful to Gunner for his years of service to the Butler City Police and the Butler City community as a whole,” O’Neill said.
