Measures continue to be taken to help the City of Butler’s finances but the situation may not be as ominous as previously thought.
During a meeting Tuesday night, Councilman Mike Walter, Director of Accounts and Finance, told members of council that it was “going to be close” in terms of the city meeting their budget for the current fiscal year. Previously, Walter said the city would run out of money in the middle of November.
Walter plans on introducing a motion during a council meeting Thursday that would prohibit all discretionary purchases over $50 unless Walter or another member of council signed off on them. This rule would go into effect Friday and remain in effect for six months. Fuel would be exempt.
Council also directed City Clerk Mindy Gall to begin preparations for an ordinance to borrow money for unfunded debt just in case it is needed.
